Oliver McGowan's story has inspired a national movement for a better understanding of learning disability and autism. Oliver McGowan was a much-loved young man whose life and experiences highlighted the urgent need for greater awareness of learning disability and autism. His story became the driving force behind mandatory training to ensure people with learning disability and autism receive safe, dignified, and person-centred care.
Everyone must complete the foundational e‑Learning via NHS England's e‑Learning for Healthcare (ELFH) platform. It takes approximately 90 minutes.
The Oliver McGowan Code of Practice is the government’s proposed framework for statutory training on learning disability and autism for all health and social care staff. It sets out expectations to ensure professionals receive the right knowledge and understanding to provide better, safer, and more inclusive care for autistic people and people with a learning disability.
This training is the national standard in learning disability and autism education for health and care staff. Developed in Oliver’s memory, it is designed to give staff the skills and confidence to support autistic people and people with a learning disability with respect, understanding, and compassion.
